FTE Staff Attorney-Anishinabe Legal Services

Anishinabe Legal Services is seeking one full-time staff attorney to
provide civil legal assistance and court representation to program clients
before area Tribal Courts, State Courts and Administrative Forums.
BACKGROUND: Anishinabe Legal
Services (ALS) is a Legal Services Corporation (LSC) funded 501(c)(3)
organization providing free legal assistance and court representation to
low-income individuals living on or near the Leech Lake, White Earth, and Red
Lake Reservations in Northern Minnesota. Most of the people who work for our
law firm reside in Bemidji, MN or the surrounding community. Walker, MN and Grand Rapids, MN are also
within 60 miles of Cass Lake, MN.
RESPONSIBILITIES: ALS is looking
for an attorney to provide civil legal assistance and court representation to
program clients before area Tribal Courts, State Courts, and Administrative
Forums. The attorney will be housed out
of our main administrative office located in Cass Lake, Minnesota. Cass Lake is close to Bemidji, Minnesota and
Walker, Minnesota. Primary duties will
include handling a wide variety of civil matters before both Tribal and Minnesota
State Courts.
We prefer the attorney
to be licensed to practice in the State of Minnesota by the anticipated start
date of employment, or able to transfer a license from another state or
planning to take the next Minnesota Bar Exam.
Attorneys licensed in any other U.S. state are eligible to apply to for
a license to practice in Leech Lake and White Earth Tribal Court. Anishinabe Legal Services can assist with
tribal court licensing and educating attorneys regarding practice in the tribal
courts.
QUALIFICATIONS: Qualified applicants
must possess strong oral and written communication skills, negotiation skills,
litigation skills, and the ability to handle a large caseload of client matters
throughout a wide geographic service area.
Applicants must also be able and willing to work efficiently and
effectively as part of a team. Ability
to make detailed time keeping/attorney notes on program management system. 0+ years of experience are welcome to apply.
Prior experience or
education regarding working within Indian Country and/or Native Americans is helpful,
but in no way required. Native American
attorneys are highly encouraged to apply.

in Cass Lake and White Earth, MN.
COMPENSATION: $70,000/yr.+ D.O.E. for attorneys licensed by a state bar. Generous benefit package for individual and
family health and dental insurance, paid time off, paid time off for Federal
holidays and life insurance. Travel
reimbursement at federal level. We allow
flex scheduling of the 37.5 hour full time work week. Hybrid office/work from
home opportunities may be available after the first six months probationary period.
Additional 401k benefit after a few
years of employment with an ALS contribution of 4% of employees salary.
