Anishinabe Legal Services is seeking a full-time staff attorney to
provide legal assistance to individuals on or near the Leech Lake, White Earth,
and Red Lake Reservations in Northern Minnesota.
BACKGROUND: The mission of Anishinabe Legal Services is to provide culturally sensitive and high-quality legal services ensuring equal access to justice for historically underserved peoples living on or near tribal lands while supporting and upholding tribal sovereignty.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Anishinabe Legal Services (ALS) is looking for an attorney to provide civil legal assistance and court representation to program clients primarily in the Leech Lake, White Earth, and Red Lake Tribal Courts. There are also opportunities to practice in state court and before administrative agencies.
The office is within 30 miles of Bemidji, MN and Walker, MN. The office is in the City of Cass Lake, MN which is on the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe tribal lands. This position is not remote-only, and will require some in-person office work, client meetings, program outreach, and court appearances. Hybrid in-office/work from home scheduling is available.
Attorneys are eligible to apply for a license to practice in Leech Lake, White Earth, and Red Lake Tribal Courts if they hold a valid attorneys license in any U.S. state. ALS will assist with Tribal Court licensing and training on practice in the Tribal Courts and the Tribes’ unique jurisdictional statuses and laws/procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS: A J.D. degree from an accredited law school is required. A valid license to practice law in any U.S. State, or has plans to take the July 2026 bar exam in Minnesota is required. Qualified applicants must possess the ability to handle a large caseload of client matters throughout a wide geographic service area and be willing to live within 60 miles of the City of Cass Lake, MN.
Prior experience working within Indian Country and/or with Native American clients and/or having had legal classes regarding Federal Indian Law is preferred, but is not required. Native American attorneys and law school graduates are highly encouraged to apply. EEO, M/F/H.

COMPENSATION: For attorneys licensed in ANY state, $80,000+ D.O.E. a year plus benefits. Generous benefit package includes individual and family health and dental insurance, substantial paid time off, paid federal holidays, life insurance, paid continuing legal education (CLE) credits, and travel reimbursement. For those sitting for the Minnesota Bar Exam in July 2026, salary is $70,000 until after confirmation of passage of the Minnesota Bar.
We allow flexible scheduling of the full-time work week. Additional retirement benefit is available after a short period of employment with an automatic program contribution (no employee match required). Relocation bonus available for individuals moving to within 60 miles of ALS’ Cass Lake office. Program attorneys are often eligible to receive state and federal student loan repayment assistance.
