About Anishinabe Legal Services (ALS): ALS is the first Native American Legal
Services organization in the United States, providing 50 years of service to
the Native communities in North Central Minnesota. ALS primarily provides civil legal
representation to individuals at or below 125% of the federal poverty
guideline. In addition to providing
individual representation, ALS also seeks to enhance tribal sovereignty by
providing services within the tribal court.
Opportunity:
ALS is seeking to host
law students or recent graduates for Equal Justice Works Fellowships beginning
in September 2017. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals interested
in Native American and/or Elder Law to make a difference in the lives of those
at-risk. Project duties would include
direct representation of elders, outreach activities, collaboration with
resource programs, tribal code review and drafting, etc. Interested candidates should contact the Administrative
Director to discuss their ideas and experience or interest.
Responsibilities
Conduct intake interviews with potential clients
Research and write documents in support of casework, litigation
efforts, and outreach
JD anticipated by May 2018, recent law graduate, or an experienced
attorney seeking to
make a career change to
public interest work
Strong writing skills
Experience working with Native Americans, Elders, or other
vulnerable individuals
Knowledge of Native American Law and jurisdiction is a plus
Must be highly organized and motivated, able to multi-task, manage
a high volume workload, be a strong team-player, and have excellent time
management skills
Salary
$44k - $50k/year plus
benefits and potential Loan Repayment Assistance.
