Looking for Staff Attorney at Main Office

Anishinabe Legal Services (ALS) is seeking a full-time Attorney to provide direct services/case-handling duties to vulnerable adults and/or children.

BACKGROUND:  Anishinabe Legal Services (ALS) is an Indian Legal Services 501(c)(3) organization providing free legal assistance to low-income individuals living on or near the Anishinabe Reservations located in North Central Minnesota through grants and contracts with federal, state and tribal governments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  ALS is looking for a well-qualified and highly motivated Staff Attorney to provide direct legal services for clients before administrative agencies and Tribal Courts throughout the Anishinabe Reservations in North Central Minnesota.

The staff attorney will be responsible to provide direct legal services to low income individuals specifically with their disability benefits including obtaining federal disability benefits through the reconsideration and appeals processes, but also handling overpayments and cessation cases, as well as other legal matters related to consumer law, school law, and tribal law.

This attorney is expected to be licensed to practice in the State of Minnesota by anticipated start date of position; this attorney is also expected to be licensed or willing to immediately become licensed before the Leech Lake, White Earth, and Red Lake Tribal Courts.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Qualified applicants must possess strong oral and written communication skills, negotiation skills, litigation skills, and have exceptional organizational skills with ability to handle a large caseload of client matters throughout a wide geographic service area.  Applicants must also be able and willing to work efficiently and effectively as part of a team.

Attorneys with civil practice are strongly preferred, as are applicants with familiarity and experience with practicing before Administrative Forums, specifically with Social Security Disability appeals, and Tribal Courts.  Prior experience working within Indian Country is also preferred.  Native American attorneys are highly encouraged to apply.  EEO, M/F/H.

All applicants are expected to be able to begin work immediately after hiring decision has been made.  All applicants are expected to have a valid driver’s license, insurance and automobile, as significant travel will be required as part of job duties and responsibilities.

COMPENSATION:  D.O.E. Benefits include individual and family health insurance, dental insurance, paid holidays, paid time off and life insurance.
