Anishinabe Legal Services (ALS) is seeking a full-time Paralegal/Non-attorney advocate to provide direct services and case-handling duties for vulnerable adults, disabled individuals, and/or children.

BACKGROUND:  Anishinabe Legal Services (ALS) is an Indian Legal Services non-profit organization providing free legal assistance to low-income individuals living on or near the Anishinabe Reservations located in North Central Minnesota through grants and contracts with federal, state and tribal governments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  ALS is looking for a highly motivated Paralegal/Non-Attorney Advocate to provide direct legal services for clients before administrative agencies throughout the Anishinabe Reservations in North Central Minnesota under the supervision of an attorney.  The advocate hired will be responsible to provide direct legal services to low income individuals specifically with their disability benefits including obtaining federal disability benefits through the application, reconsideration, and appeals processes, but also handling overpayments and cessation cases, as well as other legal matters related to consumer law, school law, and tribal law.

The advocate will also be required to participate in outreach activities for successful advocacy for clients including preparing newsletter articles and networking with other agency providers.  Knowledge of the Social Security Administration’s current practices and resources is helpful.  Prior experience working under the SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR) model is preferred, but agency will train a qualified applicant.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Qualified individuals must possess strong oral and written communication skills, negotiation skills, and have great organizational skills with ability to handle a large caseload of client matters throughout a wide geographic service area.  Applicants must be motivated and also be able and willing to work efficiently and effectively as part of a team.

Applicants with familiarity and experience practicing before Administrative Forums, specifically with Social Security Disability benefits cases or are SOAR certified, are preferred.  Native American individuals are highly encouraged to apply.  EEO, M/F/H.

COMPENSATION:  $32,000-$38,000 D.O.E. Benefits include paid individual and family health insurance, dental insurance, paid holidays, paid time off, flex scheduling, and life insurance.
